TENGARAMON in Zuzhi

Yesterday, after my night shift, I attended the special hall viewing of TENGARAMON in Zushi. The theater was completely packed and was graced by the presence of the film’s producer. It was truly a blessing that Zushi held this special extended screening following the scheduled viewing on May 25.

Many people traveled from different prefectures to attend. It was heartwarming to once again realize that those who truly value Haruma remain steadfast in their support. In December 2025, during what would have been the 6th anniversary screening of TENGARAMON, it was announced that there would be no anniversary screening. Likewise, during Haruma’s birthday this year, there was no commemorative screening. That is why this special extended viewing in Zushi meant so much to us.

The producer shared that she had been involved with the filming from the very first day until its completion. She expressed deep regret that she had never really taken the opportunity to spend time speaking with Haruma, believing there would always be another chance to meet in the future. What she could share, however, was how she witnessed Haruma gradually transform himself into the role of Godai Tomoatsu. Day after day, she watched him rehearse, immerse himself in the character, and bring the role to life with remarkable dedication and excellence.

There were also some positive announcements made during the event, though I feel it is not my place to share them here. Let us wait for the proper entities to make those announcements in due time.

Almost all of us have watched TENGARAMON countless times. Many of us even own the DVD, yet we continue to seek opportunities to watch it on the big screen.

Of course, we love watching all of Haruma’s films, dramas, and stage performances. But there is something special about TENGARAMON.

Perhaps it is because the story resonates so deeply. Godai Tomoatsu died at a relatively young age, never knowing that thousands of people in Osaka would later pay their respects at his wake, carrying lanterns and lining the streets in his honor.

Haruma, too, passed away at a young age under circumstances that many continue to question. After his passing, countless people came to learn what a remarkable actor and human being he was. His life and death touched thousands. Many even became his fans only after his passing. It is a cruel reality to contemplate.

Yesterday, while watching TENGARAMON once again, I felt as though I could almost see Haruma’s presence standing before us. It felt as though he was watching, loved and remembered.

In the history of world cinema, it is difficult to think of another example quite like this. Even years after his passing, Haruma’s fans continue to gather and seek special screenings of TENGARAMON several times a year. The enduring love and support shown for both the actor and this film remain extraordinary.

TyENGARAMON is a treasure of Japanese cinema, and we sincerely hope that the appropriate authorities and institutions will continue to acknowledge and honor it as it deserves.

As for Haruma, we continue to carry his memory with us and seek to live each day remembering the joy, inspiration, and kindness he brought into so many lives.

昨日、夜勤明けに逗子で開催された『天外者』の特別ホール上映会に参加しました。会場は満席で、映画のプロデューサーも登壇されました。5月25日の上映に続き、逗子でこのような特別追加上映が実現したことは、本当にありがたいことでした。

全国各地から多くの方々が足を運んでいました。春馬さんを本当に大切に思う人たちが、今も変わらず応援し続けていることを改めて実感し、心が温かくなりました。2025年12月、本来であれば『天外者』公開6周年記念上映が行われるはずでしたが、開催されないことが発表されました。また、今年の春馬さんのお誕生日にも記念上映はありませんでした。だからこそ、今回の逗子での特別追加上映は私たちにとって大きな意味を持つものでした。

プロデューサーのお話によると、彼女は撮影初日から作品完成まで携わっていたそうです。そして、いつでもまた会えると思い、春馬さんとゆっくり話す機会を持たなかったことを今でも悔やんでいると語られました。しかし、彼女が目の当たりにしたのは、春馬さんが五代友厚という人物へと少しずつ変わっていく姿でした。毎日のように稽古を重ね、役に深く入り込み、その人物を見事に生き抜いていく姿を見続けていたそうです。

また、会場ではいくつか嬉しい発表もありましたが、ここでお伝えするのは控えたいと思います。正式な発表を待ちたいと思います。

私たちのほとんどは『天外者』を何度も観ています。DVDを持っている人も多いでしょう。それでもなお、大きなスクリーンで観る機会を求め続けています。

もちろん、春馬さんの映画やドラマ、舞台作品はどれも大好きです。しかし、『天外者』には特別な何かがあります。

それはきっと、この物語が私たちの心に深く響くからではないでしょうか。五代友厚は比較的若くして亡くなりました。そして、自分の死後、大阪で何千人もの人々が提灯を手に街を埋め尽くし、その死を悼むことになるとは知る由もありませんでした。

春馬さんもまた若くしてこの世を去りました。その経緯については今なお疑問を抱く人も少なくありません。彼の死後、多くの人々が彼の素晴らしい俳優としての才能や、人としての魅力を知ることになりました。その人生と死は数え切れないほどの人々の心を動かし、中には亡くなった後にファンになった方も大勢います。そう考えると、とても切なく感じます。

昨日、改めて『天外者』を観ながら、まるで春馬さんがそこに立っているかのような感覚を覚えました。たくさんの人に愛され、今もなお大切に想われながら、その場を見守ってくれているように感じたのです。

世界の映画史を振り返っても、このような例はなかなか思い浮かびません。亡くなってから何年経っても、春馬さんのファンは集い、『天外者』の特別上映を年に何度も望み続けています。俳優としての春馬さん、そしてこの作品に寄せられる変わらぬ愛情と支援は、本当に特別なものだと思います。

『天外者』は日本映画界の宝です。そして、この作品が今後も正当に評価され、大切に受け継がれていくことを心から願っています。

そして春馬さんについては、これからもその存在を胸に刻みながら、彼が私たちにもたらしてくれた喜びや感動、そして優しさを忘れずに、一日一日を生きていきたいと思います。
